A message from our Principal Mr. Lopes
September 2022
Dear Parents/Guardians:
In order for our children to be successful in their academic studies, it is essential that they attend school every day on time. Those students who habitually arrive late to school are missing valuable instruction time that they need in order to achieve passing grades in their classes, as well as achieving successful scores on their City/State assessment examinations. These results could lead to your child’s promotion in doubt.
To ensure that each student is able to make up for lost instruction time because they are arriving late to school, beginning September 26, 2022, we will be implementing the I.S. 10 After-School Late Literacy program. Those students who arrive to school late will be attending the Late Literacy program which will begin in (room 117) after P.M. Homeroom at 2:20 and end at 2:50 PM. The program will be supervised by a qualified teacher and the students will be given appropriate assignments.
Any student who refuses to comply with the new lateness policy will be subjected to disciplinary measures as set forth in the Citywide Standards of Discipline and Intervention Measures (The Discipline Code). According to Infraction B-21, any student…”being insubordinate; defying or disobeying the lawful authority of school personnel or school safety agents”, will result in a Principal’s suspension.
Those students who are not in compliance with the I.S. 10 dress code and are not wearing a school T-shirt will also be required to attend the Literacy Program on that day.
Those students who arrive late due to circumstances beyond their control will be excused if they have a dated note written by their parent/guardian explaining why they were late. Examples of an excused lateness would be traffic due to bad weather, or an emergency situation. A note that says oversleeping will not be accepted.
Please explain to your child the importance of arriving to school on time and dressed according to the school’s dress code. Remind them that the doors on 46th street and 31st Ave and 45th st., open at 7:55 AM and close at 8:05 AM. Any student who arrives after the doors close in these two areas and enters through the main entrance, is considered late, and will be required to attend this program in the afternoon.
